My Home Town Bhilai Nagar

Chhattisgarh came into being on November 1, 2000. Larger than Tamil Nadu, it is just the right size, richest in mineral resources and is also fortunate to have a low population density.12% of India's forests are in Chhattisgarh, and 44% of the State's land is under forests. Identified as one of the richest bio-diversity habitats, the Green State of Chhattisgarh has the densest forests in India, rich wildlife, and above all, over 200 non-timber forest products, with tremendous potential for value addition.

And My HomeTown...Bhilai, city in east central India, is in Chhattisgarh state. Bhilai Steel Plant is five-time winner of Prime Ministers Trophy for best Integrated Steel Plant in the country. The city's main industry is a giant, government-owned steel plant that was built in collaboration with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and that started production in 1959. Nearby mines, connected to the steel plant by specially built rail lines, supply it with iron ore, dolomite, and manganese. In addition to steel, the plant manufactures railway sleepers, rails, construction materials, and other steel products. Other factories in Bhilai produce chemicals, acids, and gases. The city is located on a rail line connecting Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and Mumbai (formerly Bombay), and on a major highway connecting Kolkata with Dhule, Mumbai, and Agra. Formerly a small town, Bhilai grew rapidly in the decades following the construction of the steel plant.

Apart from the mega steel plant,Bhilai, the knowledge capital of the State, alone sends over 50 students to the elite Indian Institutes of Technology every year. A unique Private Universities Act has been passed to attract investments in quality higher-education.
